We recently had the opportunity to visit Old Tabby Links in Spring Island, SC, a beautiful private golf club just north of Hilton Head. We were there to profile the Head Golf Professional, Billy Sampson. Before sitting down with Billy himself, we wanted to get some background and learn more from the people who know him best. So we spoke to the members at Old Tabby Links, his friends, family members, fellow PGA golf professionals and residents of the greater community. In each conversation, we were struck by the single word that every person used to describe Billy — Inspiration.
“I can’t make you do anything,” Billy told us, brushing aside the unanimous praise. “All I can do is beg you to be the best you can be.”
“Beg” is indeed the word Billy Sampson used when he sat down with us, which speaks volumes about his sincerity and how passionately he cares about the well-being of others.
He is a man who sees the bigger picture. He greets every day as an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, whether it’s welcoming a new golfer to the game, coaching an expert golfer to greater heights, guiding his members to better health and fitness or leading efforts to benefit the local community.
He recognizes that golf can be transformative, summing up his approach and his place in the world this way.
“At the end of the day, driving home, what did you get to do today? Did you change someone’s life? You could have, and not even know it.”
Thank you for all that you do, Billy, to make a difference – in the game and in people’s lives.
