Even though the Spring weather has been very unpredictable, it is great to have the golf season back in full swing! Don’t be surprised if you see poa on many of the greens in the Chicago area. This is a discoloration of the grass and turf, most notably on the greens, but is quite normal during these May days when the temperature can be as high as 75% during the peak sunshine hours and as low as 35% at night. The poa usually doesn’t affect how smooth or fast the greens can actually get.
I still can’t believe that Annika Sorenstam has announced her retirement effective at the end of the LPGA Tour season. To many of us, and maybe to Annika herself, she is near the top of her game again, and not too far from possibly being able to overtake Lorena Ochoa as the number one women’s player in the world. Annika says her reason for retiring is to spend more time on her business ventures and to start a family. You can’t argue with that, although I’m surprised she wouldn’t just cut back on her playing schedule and still participate in competitive events. To retire at the age of 37 is too soon in my opinion. But hand it to Annika for being able to leave on her terms. With 72 LPGA Tour wins including 10 majors, she still may be remembered as the best woman to ever play the game.
