Hey this is Jeff Flagg.
We’re out here at a demotion site here in Chicago,
and today I’m gonna–
Hold on. Is there any glare?
Today, I’m gonna show you how to
hit a yard drive.
Let’s get to work.
So a yard drive is just like any other drive,
but bigger.
First thing you’re gonna do is tee the ball up,
grab your driver, pick a spot,
nice comfortable stance,
take a nice, smooth, easy swing.
All you do, swing nice and smooth and
it will carry about yards.
Okay, so if that doesn’t work,
here are a few more tips to
really help you smoke your driver.
Okay, the main reason I wanted to come
to this demotion site is for step number one.
I want you to go outside, I want you to grab a rock,
and I want you to throw it sidearm.
Now, question.
What were you thinking about when you threw that rock?
Turning your shoulders, opening your hips,
holding the lag, probably not.
You were just thinking about throwing a rock,
and that’s the whole secret to hitting it far,
to let the arms dictate the speed of the club,
and not let your body get in the way.
Okay, now I want to show you two ways
to increase your arm speed in the golf swing.
First, you want to let that right elbow fly
at the top.
It’s really hard to create arm speed
when that right elbow is tucked.
So really let it fly and really open up the chest
and let that right peck and shoulder
create that speed coming down.
Along with that, you really want to take
the tension out of your left arm,
so that right arm can do its job and
drive through just like when you were skipping rocks,
and the left arm is just along for the ride.
Okay, step number three is gonna be
a simple drill you can do to really
feel those arms working in golf swing.
My coach Tony Luczak, he calls this The Flamingo Drill.
So what you’re gonna do, you’re gonna
play the ball off your front foot,
drop your back foot back,
and keep your toe up.
Okay, and then all you’re gonna do
is swing as hard as you can, under control,
in that stance.
That stance, what it’s doing, it’s taking
your hips out of it, your legs out of it,
so your arms are creating all the speed in the swing.
