I have a lot of people who come in to see me who don’t turn as much during the backswing as I would like – or as they would like -and almost all the time they assume and think and tell me that they have a flexibility issue. They think, hey, I can’t turn back as much in the guys and the girls on TV because I’m not flexible enough.
That’s not really the case. Are there some people who maybe aren’t flexible enough? Sure, but the reason the greater majority – 90 plus percent – of people I see don’t turn enough is not because they aren’t flexible. It’s because they have a movement pattern issue or they don’t understand how to use their body to move back more.
In this video, I talk about four different pieces to look at to increase your backswing turn. For some of you, one of the four will work, for some of you guys all four out of four may do the trick. Play with these. See if there’s something you don’t currently do.
So first things first, increasing backswing turn. What’s the point? Well, the end goal with more backswing turn his distance. It’s increased club head speed, it’s hitting your driver farther and all your clubs and also some increased solidness of contact. If you turn your body more back, that can also help club path.
We’re going to start this from the ground up with our feet. All else equal, if you take your normal setup, if you flare your right foot or point your toes to the right of the target, that will increase your ability to turn your hips going back, thereby increasing your ability to turn in your entire backswing.
Part number two is your right leg. The more you keep your right leg bent during your backswing, the less you can turn your hips. The more you straighten or lose flex in your right leg, the more you can turn your hips.
Part number three, when we go back his belt buckle, or hip turn.
The more you turn your hips back, the more you can turn your shoulders and torso back. If you don’t turn my hips at all, you can only turn your shoulders maybe 30, 40 degrees.
This is where a lot of this flexibility stuff comes in. You guys make a backswing, your knee is really bent, your foot is straight and you don’t turn your hips. If my foot is straight, my knee is bent and I don’t turn my hips I’m not flexible either!
The last part, maybe a little more technical, but I want to go through it so you guys know it and it has to do with what we call call flexion and extension. Everyone who turns well also has some amount of extension in their backswing. This can look a little strange to some, so it’s best to watch the description of this in the video.
These are four pieces for hitting the ball farther and making a bigger backswing turn – start from the feet and work your way up.
