Cycling Safety – How Much Is Our Responsibility? | The GCN Show Ep. 321

This week, how much responsibility should we as cyclists be taking for our own safety? Plus, another doping scandal hits professional cycling.

This week in the world of cycling we learnt that Vittorio Brumotti is firstly, very skilled, and secondly, mad as a hatter. I wouldn’t even walk on that wall, let alone ride and hop on it. We also learnt that former Formula 1 star Jenson Button hangs to the left…

Finally this week, we learnt that being in the thick of the action at a sprint finish is not for the faint of heart. Thanks very much to VELON for allowing us to use that fantastic clip – I absolutely love how much that video tells you about what it’s like to be in the bunch.

Our main talking point this week, though, is how much responsibility should cyclists take for their own safety? This is off the back of a recent tweet by Phil Gaimon in which he’d screen grabbed his response to a YouTube commenter who had criticised him for wearing all black gear.

His response was to question whether they’d have trouble seeing a black car, which is a fair point, although somebody did reply, citing a study which had found that black cars are 47% more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident at dawn or dusk than vehicles of other colours.

Regardless, we’re not about to go into an in depth discussion about car and clothing colours, but it did get me thinking about how much responsibility we should take to be seen on the road.

If you enjoyed this video, make sure to give it a thumbs up and share it with your friends. 👍
